Mouse Rabbit

PICT0735 PICT0697 PICT0734

In this episode of SJ Coffee Shops, we will visit the one that belongs to business mogul Yesung and his family.

Unlike Siwon’s (former) café in Myeongdong (명동), Mouse Rabbit is located in a less central and touristy part of town.  Situated near Konkuk University (건국대학교) in southeastern Seoul, Yesung elected for the college population rather than the business or foreign population.

To get there (I’m going to try my best):

PICT0737

Take Line 2 (2 호선) or Line 7 (7호선)to Konkuk University Station (건대입구역) exit 2. When you descend down the stairs out of the station, make an immediate left (do not cross the street).  Go straight until you see a Samsung Mobile store, at which you will turn left into an alley.  It will be up ahead.

PICT0732

Step right on in.

I went on the Saturday before Yesung’s enlistment (for those of you not in the know, South Korea requires all able-bodied men to perform 2 years of military service) and arrived a little after 11 in hopes of avoiding a high fangirl volume, but some fangirls had already taken up residence and more were coming in from all directions.

PICT0703

No vacancies.

PICT0702

Holy sidewinder Batman!

That last picture was taken from my position on the staircase.

While I was waiting for my food, I decided to pass the time by taking photos of the shop.

PICT0727 PICT0728

So it seems that Yesung is going for the “Most Artistic Decor” Award (one of the members did say that he was the most artistic).  Bear with me here, as I’m no art critic, but compared to Siwon’s café, the art in Mouse Rabbit felt more cohesive to me, like they all went together under one roof, whereas the art in Twosome Coffee had more of a clean and sophisticated feel to it.

Now this art is all very nice, but what about the food?

Strawberry Smoothie

PICT0721

It was Dante’s Inferno outside so I decided not to order hot chocolate and opted for a strawberry smoothie instead. It was not too thick and not too thin. It was actually quite refreshing, probably because there was some ice in it.

Oreo Cookie Cake

PICT0720

After my heavenly experience with Siwon’s Choi Cookie Cheesecake (CCC), I was eager to try this Oreo cookie cake for comparison purposes. Would this cake rival or surpass the CCC? Would Yesung be able to look Siwon dead in the eye and say

“Checkmate!”

So I bit into it and

tumblr_m95lezWgwQ1rqihmqo1_r1_250

Well…

nothing happened.  The Oreo cookie cake “left me hanging,” as my dad always said. So it certainly wasn’t this

ca0

but neither was it this

3v32g3.

(Not trying to undermine those of you who have experienced or know someone who is experiencing cancer)

Instead it was more like a “good attempt, but I’ve had stronger sweets” kind of thing. The cake had a promising start, but then it tripped up somewhere along the way to the finish line. It was like a firework that bursts in the air with stunning flair but then fizzes out after 2 seconds.  For you Nasties out there, its like when you’re having sex, you’re into it and he/she is into it, you’re about to climax – and then someone’s mother/father/sibling/grandparent/boss etc., walks in.

While we’re still on that example…

tumblr_m76ekbDFkF1qbtf5qo7_r1_250

So I was eating the cake, tasting the sweet Oreo goodness in my mouth, and I was thinking “this is getting good-I wonder what the aftertaste will be like”…

tumblr_m79mu9MCgX1rsskhm

“BUT THEN!!!!!”

I was denied.

tumblrltowjsx2p31r0gdv3

So Yesung lost the Sweet Battle but he won the Decor Battle.

Bonus: I think I saw the parents.

Siwon’s Café in Myeongdong: Twosome Coffee

PICT0475

PICT0477

PICT0476

The members of Super Junior have recently been opening up coffee shops left and right recently, with business mogul Yesung leading the charge.  He opened his first café, Handel and Gretel, in posh Apgujeong (압구정) for his parents in 2011 and when it closed, he opened a café with his younger brother Jongjin called Mouse Rabbit in 2012 near Konkuk University (건국대학교).  The mothers of Leeteuk, Sungmin, and Kyuhyun opened a branch of  coffee brand Kona Beans in Apgujeong in late 2011.   Eunhyuk’s mother has owned a branch of popular coffee and bread shop Tous les Jours near Guro Digital Complex station (구로디지털단지역) since 2012.

And then Siwon decided to dive into this sea of coffee shops with his Twosome Coffee shop in Myeongdong (명동) on January 30, 2013.  He seems to have only tread water though, as his shop closed at the end of April.  Maybe the rent was “too damn high?”

Welcome to another episode of Where I’ve Been and the premiere episode of SJ Coffee Shops- Siwon’s Café in Myeongdong!

Initially I intended to visit  Siwon’s coffee shop in June before I return to the States, but once I found out that it was closing at the end of April (via a friend and the FYEAH Siwon tumblr), I decided to move up my timetable.  But then I had to find the place, which turned out to be quite difficult in densely populated Myeongdong.  So my first trek can be summed up as me thinking, “Maybe I should go this way” or “Maybe I should look around here” in addition to

tumblr_ljv2ril9Uu1qg7xnh

when I wasn’t sure if I had already been down that street.  And when I thought I found it, it turned out to be another Twosome Coffee that happened to be on the second floor of another Olive Young. So I left in disgrace on that Friday morning.

However, undaunted, I regrouped and returned on a rainy Saturday morning and tried again.  I still got mightily lost; “Siwon, could you have put your café in a place where I can find it?!” I shouted in my head.  Then about 10 minutes later I found it (I guess Shisus really does hear your thoughts).

Here’s the map if any of you can interpret it.

But it wasn’t time to go in just yet.

tumblr_m141w0iniV1qjpqkj

Don’t give me that look Eunhyuk.

I had other plans, such as buying books for school. I vowed to return next week.

And I did.

PICT0547

It was a bright and sunny Friday morning when I arrived in Myeongdong a bit after 9:30.  However, the Olive Young wasn’t open until 10, and since you have to walk up the stairs to access the café ,I ended up looking to accomplish the other task on my list: buying a swanky new purse.   A little after 10, I returned to the Olive Young and it was open.  Now, you have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the café, which is on the second floor of the Olive Young, so you get to see a lot of Olive Young beauty products.  The second floor also contains a mini Kpop CD and merchandise store, full of things that you can probably find cheaper online or in a bookstore.

Anyway, I walked up to the back of the wall café, smiled at some Japanese ELFs, and looked over the menu.

PICT0519

True Fact: He authored the menu.

True Fact: He authored the menu himself.

Now a word on how I evaluate coffee shops: I don’t drink coffee.

is_yesung_okay___macro_by_tildeathbabyboy-d4z8xw5

So I (usually) judge all coffee shops by the quality of their Hot Chocolate and a select sweet.  I walked up to the sweet counter, trying to decide which sweet would be sufficient enough to judge.

PICT0517

tumblr_lrtz0bqg5b1qeouxeo6_250

And then I saw the cheesecake. The “Choi Cookie Cheesecake” (second on top from the left) that was labeled as one of Siwon’s favorite cheesecakes (the other was some type of berry cheesecake).

tumblr_lvemly1NEF1qcqdsho1_r1_250

Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite cheesecake of all time is the Cheesecake Factory’s Oreo Cheesecake: I was quite, quite irate when they discontinued it and replaced it with the Oreo Dream Extreme Cheesecake-yes I tried it and didn’t like it! Too rich and too much chocolate! Now I have to choose between their Key Lime Cheesecake (which can get boring if you’ve had Key Lime Pie before) or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (sometimes I want a smoother cheesecake experience).  Because the truth is:

…for their entrées.

If you’ll excuse my tirade,  back to the Choi Cookie Cheesecake …

tumblr_m94qmcgmWn1qffql1

and so I ordered it along with my hot chocolate and a chicken olive sandwich (also one of Siwon’s favorites; for you beef lovers, there was some beef sandwich that he liked as well (I don’t eat beef or pork so of course I don’t remember the name of the sandwich).   While I was waiting, I took a looksie around the shop, which often felt like an art gallery rather than a coffee shop (the tunes emitting from the ceiling could have been replaced with a live ensemble of classical musicians).

Now it’s time to get to the nitty-gritty about the culinary quality of the food.

PICT0545

The Hot Chocolate

The Long Answer: Finally. Finally. Finally I found a hot chocolate in a coffee shop/café that doesn’t taste chalky, lose its sweetness after a couple of sips, or make me want to reach for a fistful of sugar packets.  It was rich and thick, the equivalent of me dumping two packets of Nestle’s Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows into one of my coffee mugs at home.  Except to get on Siwon’s level of Hot Chocolate, I would need to get one of the huge coffee mugs (basically the size of the cup in the picture) and dump four or five Nestle’s packets (and I’m trying to not put my health in danger).  Definitely a potent and powerful drink.

The Short Answer: “This is how Hot Chocolate is supposed to be.”; “You [drink] the hot chocolate, the chocolate bites back my man!”

The Visual Answer:

It’s some strong stuff.

The Choi Cookie Cheesecake (CCC)

PICT0544

The Long Answer:  What does this dessert not have? It has the Oreo (or Oreo-like cookies), vanilla ice cream, and a plain cheesecake sitting underneath it all.  It perfectly merges all the key components of dessertology into one: cookies, ice cream, and cake! The Oreo cookies and vanilla ice cream tasted like, well, Oreo cookies and vanilla ice cream.  The cheesecake was smooth and sweet, but not too sweet so that I wouldn’t mistake it as a Key Lime pie cheesecake. All together, these elements created a kick-butt dessert. I really wish that the Cheesecake Factory would bring the Oreo Cheesecake back so there could be an Epic Cheesecake Battle of History-

The Chicken Olive Sandwich

The Long Answer: I was too distracted by the hot chocolate and cheesecake, but the sandwich was pretty good, though I personally would have preferred a Chicken Pesto Sandwich.

The Short Answer: Very Good.

Final Thoughts

The way I see it, there are only three possibilities for the infinite goodness that is the cheesecake:

a)  Siwon marched into a Cheesecake Factory in either New York or LA and  bought the Oreo Cheesecake recipe (which would explain why it’s no longer on the menu).

First-

tumblr_lp6jhr2AgW1qk2tido1_500

tumblr_m5npg3i57X1rnz4x1

Second-

But wait a minute ….

tumblr_lwqx26cc7E1qeiftoo4_250

tumblr_lwqx26cc7E1qeiftoo5_250

Well then.

I mean, the Choi cheesecake was excellent, but for removing the Oreo cheesecake off the menu…

tumblr_lxm27xcDM01r662zao1_400

b) Siwon plagiarized the recipe (even a little plagiarism will get you a zero on your assignment).

Well then.

tumblr_m8k51rjD8F1r5x2op

c) Siwon is a Sweetie (or Sweetaholic or whatever we call ourselves these days).

Now you’re speaking my language!

Siwon’s a man after my own heart, and thus

끝나다 (The End)

P.S. Siwon will donate all the proceeds to various charities.

Taken from my position against the bar enclosing Standing Area C, SS5 Seoul Day 1 (3/23)

With all the tweets and hints about Super Junior’s upcoming concert tour Super Show 5, you’d think that Super Junior was trying to tell us that SS5 is “gonna be the best damn thing your grandpappy’s ever seen.”  And in some ways it was, and in some ways not.  Find out below in this episode of Where I’ve Been: Super Show 5 Edition!

THE WINNERS:

Eunhyuk

He’s going H.A.M!

Eunhyuk once again proved that he is the Stage Master.  From taking over Leeteuk’s role as Concert MC to cosplaying Wolverine, to (of course) dancing, Eunhyuk did it all flawlessly and without a hitch.  As if we needed any further evidence, his version of the viral phenomenon Harlem Shake just cements his status as one of K-pop’s most Epic Stage Masters.

*******

Siwon

Siwon made several leaps and bounds in this first set of SS5 performances.  The first thing he did was something we just didn’t think was possible: dancing with girls.  Usually avoiding any sensual contact with the ladies, Siwon actually danced with one of the female dancers in Club No.1 (2:00-2:07) and let himself be touched by several ladies in So Cold (1:41-1:50).

He then did something that we didn’t think was possible because we considered it to be so out of range for him that it failed to appear in our thought Cloud: cross-dressing.

Introducing…Won Dambi

When I first laid eyes on Won Dambi, I blinked twice because I wasn’t sure if this was real or one of those strange, hallucinogenic dreams that people have every so often (whether natural or drug-induced).  In fact my face looked a little something like this:

“My Word…”

But then it turned to this:

tumblr_m7uaeoE5PO1r2anpf

So for dancing with the opposite sex and cross-dressing, Siwon wins the Enterprise Award for boldly going to worlds where he’s never gone before (at least in public).

*******

Henry and Zhou Mi

Never have we seen so much integration of Henry and Zhou Mi in a Super Show concert. Rather than being regulated to only Super Junior-M songs, the dynamic Chinese duo appeared in some original Super Junior numbers like Wonder Boy and  Sunny and participated in the Super Junior “Super Hero” skit, with Henry as Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z and Zhou Mi as Woody from Toy Story.

tumblr_mk5e83mYBS1qa7tfso1_250

"KAME....HAME.... "

“KAME….HAME…. HAAAA!”

tumblr_mkmnsvmTD21qa79jqo1_500

Zhou Mi also performed a cover of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?” along with regular SJ members Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and Sungmin.

And Henry performed his solo “So Cold” (well technically Eunhyuk wrote the lyrics and Henry composed the song) with Eunhyuk, Donghae, and Siwon.

Henry and Zhou Mi have faced some troubles due to anti-fans in previous Super Shows, but their determination and persistence has finally paid off: neither a “Only 13” nor a boo could be heard from the audience.  Therefore, the duo get a WINNING Award for their efforts to stand up against ELF discrimination.

*******

Sungmin

‘Nuff Said.

*******

Eunhae Fans

It was a happy day (or two) for fans of the Eunhae (Eunhyuk & Donghae) duo.  They got pelvic thrusts in Harlem Shake, toplessness in Rockstar, and if they resided in South America*, they got Eunhae’s single Oppa Oppa.

Yes, it was a very happy day.

*******

Marvel Comics

Super Show 5 brings Marvel free advertising for its comics with the boys cosplaying as a total of 7 Marvel characters: Loki (Kyuhyun), Iron Man (Donghae), Captain America (Siwon), Hulk (Shindong), Thor (Kangin), Wolverine (Eunhyuk), and Spiderman (Ryeowook).  We never expected SJ to be Marvel fanboys (well, at least 7 of them).

My guess as to why Zhou Mi (not pictured), Sungmin, and Henry chose to cosplay as Woody, Huo Yuanjia, and Goku? They’re closet DC fans.

*******

THE LOSERS

Solos

Fans expecting Siwon’s rendition of a popular gospel song, a performance of Eunhae’s new track Hello, or a Kyuhyun ballad were thoroughly disappointed when their expectations didn’t materialize.  The only clear solo (besides Yesung’s) was Kangin’s- which was significant because he hasn’t performed in a Super Show for two years- but that wasn’t enough to satiate the appetites of most fans.

*******

The Setlist

If you attended the Seoul leg of the tour, you didn’t hear or see Spy, Oppa Oppa, A Man in Love, Twins, Miracle, Dancing Out, and popular Spanish song Ai se eui te pego (Oh, If I Get You!).  If you attended the South American leg of the tour, you didn’t hear or see Boom Boom, Club No. 1, Kangin’s solo, So Cold (maybe because it is so warm there), How Am I Supposed To Live Without You, the cross-dressing performances, the Shindong, Eunhyuk, and Donghae dance performance, Sapphire Blue, and Show Me Your Love. (I’m not counting Yesung’s and KRY’s solo because Yesung made it clear that he would only be performing for the Seoul shows as he was prohibited from leaving the country before his enlistment date.)  Past Super Shows had a clear standard setlist with a few variations  based on the country (mostly in China and Taiwan because of Super Junior-M), but this was the first one in which there were such a large chasm between the setlists.

*******

The Honorable Honorable Mention

Yesung

Yesung bid a tearful goodbye to all ELFs during the Seoul concerts,  as he was prohibited from leaving the country before his enlistment (South Korea requires all men 18 and over to serve one two year term in the military). On the first day, he had a little accident (around 2:40) where he lost his footing  and which he was very upset about (so upset that he left the stage for a few numbers).  However, it didn’t spoil his singing for the rest of the concert, or the next day’s performance of his solo Gray Paper, which is perhaps the best rendition that we’ve heard yet.

Don’t worry, Yesung- we won’t forget you or your singing.  Believe it!

*******

Special Mention

PICT0454

This Japanese fan was my partner throughout the concert- I comforted her when Donghae’s sexiness became too much for her to handle, and she looked out for me.  And when it came time for us to part, she gave me a hug and took a picture of the two of us to document our relationship.  And I took a picture of her…

“Egads, it’s so sad!”

Where I’ve Been: 2012 Gangnam Festival K-Pop Concert (Oct.7th)

안녕하세요여러분! Hello everyone and welcome to the first episode of the occasional series Where I’ve Been, which will focus on high-profile (though not necessarily expensive) events that I’ve attended.

오빠강남스타일! Oppa Gangnam Style! I’m sure all of you recognize the tagline of Psy’s (싸이) worldwide hit and have watched the music video (perhaps even “Liked” it).  But if you haven’t : 보세요! (Watch it!) Psy held a free concert at Seoul Plaza on October 4th in front of 80,000 fans and people who are appreciative of how the singer is increasing Korea’s profile throughout the world.  The highlight: Even though he has not topped the Billboard chart (at least not yet), he took his shirt off while performing “Gangnam Style” anyway. (This author did not go but other exchange students did.)

Anyway, you wouldn’t have found Psy at the 2012 Gangnam Festival K-Pop Concert – instead you would have found girl group Girls’ Generation (SNSD/소녀시대) and boybands Super Junior and TVXQ (동방신기), three of Korea’s most famous idol groups.

The Lowdown

What I Spent:  Only about 3 hours of standing in line and/or sitting on the ground (like in the above picture) waiting to enter the main concert area and then another 90 minutes of waiting for the concert to start.  It was a free concert- only 6,000 people were allowed into the main concert area; everyone else got a streetside view.  The actual concert was from 7-9pm, but my friend from church and I arrived around 2:30.

The Venue: A stage on Yeongdaero Street in front of COEX Mall

Crowd Dynamics: If you have the Princesses, Kings, and Gods of K-pop performing all on one stage, there’s bound to be crowd wrestling to get those coveted spots near the stage.  Once the first section of people were allowed into the main concert area, my friend and I were pushed from the back to go forward (my friend and I hardly moved-the crowd in the back literally pushed us forward and over to where we were supposed to enter).  When the back force stopped, we were packed like sardines in a can and I held onto my friend’s backpack for dear life.  A security guard even yelled at the mob to stop pushing before someone gets hurt (there were two girls who were crouched on the ground and remained still as the crowd wrestling went on- I prayed that they weren’t hurt or wouldn’t get trampled).  Once that was over and I got into the main concert area, I found a spot near the stage, but because of my height I couldn’t see over all the heads to get a a good view of the stage.  We were packed like sardines.

*Side Note: Fangirling is serious business in Korea.  Girls will wait outside for hours at concert arenas, media buildings, or the  idols’ residences to catch a glimpse of their favorite idols.  They’ll wait for hours just to get in to the concert venue.  They’ll buy as many copies of their favorite group’s new album as they can to boost the group’s place on Korea’s music charts; they’ll vote as often as they can to ensure that their idol group wins an award at one of Korea’s end-of -the- year music awards programs. They’ll donate sacks of rice to charity in their idol’s name and send food gifts to their idols.  The mission of fangirls here is to do everything and anything they can to ensure their idol or idol group’s success.  Naturally they want to see their idols in person as a reward for all their dedicated efforts.   So the choice that foreign K-Pop fans have to make comes down to this: to participate or not to participate.  Participating means giving up your time, money, or other other plans (and oftentimes all three) to attend concerts, fansign events, fanmeets, music show recordings, etc, with a possible side of crowd wrestling.  Non-participation means you look at fancams and/or official recordings of such events on your Mac of PC (at least you get to rewind and read YouTube comments).  You Make The Decision.*

The Tracklist: All of the groups performed a selection of their hit songs- Girls’ Generation glitzed and glammed their way into fans’ hearts with “Genie,” “The Boys,” “Kissing You,” “Hoot,” “Mr. Taxi,” “Oh!,” and “Gee;” Super Junior energized the audience with “Opera,” “Bonamana,” “Miracle,” “Mr. Simple.” “Sexy, Free, & Single,” and perennial favorite “Sorry, Sorry;” TVXQ proved that they’ve still got the power after a group split in 2009 and nearly 10 years in the game with “Maximum,” “I Don’t Know (Korean version),”  “Rising Sun,” “왜 Why? Keep Your Head Down,” and new hit “Catch Me.”

The Final Analysis:  Although I don’t have a camera that even makes a grain of sand look good and I was people locked for the first 20 minutes, I’m still a happy fangirl.  I had to get to the fence (hence away from the crowd) to really enjoy the concert though.  I saw most of the Super Junior members up close, including my bias (K-Pop speak for “favorite member”) and that of my friend, who is still trapped in the States, where K-pop bands/singers generally are only allowed to perform in Los Angeles, New York, or New Jersey.  Said friend is probably angry that I saw her husband at close range and failed to take a picture of him (I waved but didn’t catch his attention 😦   ).  I ditched my stone-aged digital camera near the beginning of the camera in favor of dancing and singing along with Super Junior and TVXQ.  (Don’t get me wrong, I danced and sang to Girls’ Generation’s “Gee” and would have done the same for some of their other songs had I been smart and gotten to the fence earlier, but I was primarily there for Super Junior and TVXQ.) The fence provided me with a good view of the stage and performances as opposed to my eyes trying to scale the backs of taller strangers.  I’m going to have to remember that number next time I go to a free outdoor concert.

Bottom Line: I messed up or skipped some dance moves, but I had fun 🙂 .  The whole experience served as my official initiation into fangirldom (specifically the crowd wrestling).

See you next time … whenever that is.
